Transit Oriented Development: An Evolving Typology
Transit-oriented development (TOD) has overtaken super tall buildings as the preferred development typology in China. TODs, however, are far more complicated and present a myriad of design challenges. Division of building management and ownership, appropriate stacking of functions, structural challenges, and the mitigation of subway vibrations are just a few of the topics to be discussed during the TOD building tour.Shanghai Pudong Financial Plaza covers 470,000 square meters and comprises a shopping center, bus terminal, four-story underground parking structure, and three office buildings. The project began in June 2012 and was completed in 2017.The presentation will focus on TOD design challenges and a Q&A will follow with SOM Chief Design Partner, Leo Chow, and the developer of the project, Shanghai Lujiazui Development (Group) Company Limited Department of Planning and Design management - General Manager, Tao Jianqiang. The discussion will be moderated by AIA President Silas Chiow.
