Lecture | Yanfei Shui | The Banality of Scenery

Synopsis

Focusing on the recent completed projects from NATURALBUILD, this lecture reveals that the implicit strategic thinking imperceptibly guides design to acquire further adaptation in circumstance of the explicit external constraints.

Through the manipulation of the spatial depth, scale ambiguity and allomnesia, the objective experience of daily scenery is consequently transformed, and turning on a new horizon of experience which similar to the “oblivious of oneself” mentioned in traditional Chinese culture, and pays attention to the mutual inclusion and interaction between subject and object. The final effect is out of expectation, but it is within understanding.

Yanfei Shui is a founder and chief architect of NATURALBUILD, as particularly representative of emerging architecture studio based in Shanghai. NATURALBUILD embraces the complexities and ambiguities of the reality in China, to seek for new possibilities that contribute the expanding meaning of naturality in contemporary world.

The works of NATURALBUILD has been issued widely in the publication of the Architectural Journey, Japan Architecture+Urbanism, and the PLAN. Recently, the project of Lostvilla Boutique Hotel has won the honor award for commercial architecture at 2018 AIA Shanghai Chapter and has invited to exhibit and participate in the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale.
