Artist Biographies
Mr. James Carpenter has worked at the intersection of art, engineering and the built environment for nearly 50 years, advancing a distinctive vision based on the use of natural light and glass as the foundational elements of the built environment. Carpenter founded the cross-disciplinary design firm James Carpenter Design Associates in 1979 to support the application of these aesthetic principles to large-scale building projects.
Mr. Shi Senbin is a Shanghai native who studied at the Shanghai Arts and Crafts School. He seeks to unite modern techniques of production with a traditional focus on craft. He created the "Heart of Landscape" at Shanghai Tower using an innovative technique for cast glass. He is the founder of Kangyu Glass, a workshop focused on creating unique works of art glass.
Mr. Justin Shi, son of Shi Sen Bin is a practicing artist who studied fine art at Central Saint Martins in London. He is particularly interested in working with enamel techniques, and has works included in the collection at Buckingham Palace. His work in cloisonne "Reincarnation" will be featured in the event space Shanghai Tower.
Event Description
This event focused on the interrelation of Art and Architecture, in particular through the use of glass to create unique architectural expressions. Mr. Carpenter presented a lecture featuring his work with international architects, followed by a moderated discussion. A reception and exhibit of works by the artists then followed the discussion.
