AIA Shanghai is pleased to announce its 3rd annual awards program to celebrate China's best design and designers, a country which has become a focus for innovation and design excellence.

The AIA Shanghai Design Excellence Awards Program celebrates new architecture in China. This international design awards program welcomes entries from members and non-members with projects in China.

The winning Awards will be judged by an international jury comprised of leading figures from around the world, including a unique mixture of mainland and international architects, critics, academics, and theorists.

Yong Shao

Professor & Director of Urban Rural Heritage Conservation Dept

Tongji University

Yong Shao is full professor and Director of Urban-rural Heritage Conservation Department of Tongji University in Shanghai, professor of World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region, expert member of ISCEAH of ICOMOS, and National Committee of Historical and Cultural Cities Conservation of China.

Her projects include “Conservation and Management Plan of World heritage Site: Lijiang Old Town”, “Conservation and Management Plan of World heritage Site: Pingyao Ancient City”, “Conservation Plan of Historical Districts of Shanghai.  “The Water Town Conservation” received World Heritage Conservation Distinct Award of Asia-Pacific region of UNESCO in 2003.  Shao is UNESCO Chair of Environment and Landscape Design, and UN-Habitat program for historic quarter for all.  Shao holds B.A., M.A., and PhD. from College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University.

Joshua J. Pan

Joshua Jih Pan completed his bachelor of science degree at Cheng Kung University in Taiwan in 1963. He subsequently received his professional degree from Rice University in Houston, Texas in 1966 and Master of Science degree in Architecture/Urban Design from Columbia University in New York City the following year.

In 1981, he founded J. J. Pan and Partners. The firm has received international acclaim for its range of planning and building projects, across all typologies and scales, in addition to numerous appearances in publications. Mr. Pan was elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1994 and received Taiwan’s prestigious ‘Outstanding Architect’ Award for his lifetime achievement in 1996. He was awarded Class I registered architect status in China in 2009, the Outstanding Alumnus Award of National Cheng Kung University in 2013, and the National Award for Arts in 2015.

Jeannette Kuo

Co-Founding Partner

Karamuk Kuo Architects

Jeannette Kuo is co-founding partner of Zurich-based Karamuk Kuo Architects and Assistant Professor-in-Practice of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her research and work focus on the intersection of structures, space, and culture. From multi-unit housing to cultural infrastructures like the Augusta Raurica Archaeological Center, the work of the office spans across scales and typologies, each time looking for spatial opportunities within the constraints of reality. Recent built works include the International Sports Sciences Institute in Lausanne and the Weiden Secondary School. Publications include the two-volume research on workspace typologies: A-Typical Plan (2013) and Space of Production (2015), as well as the recent El Croquis 161 monograph on Karamuk Kuo. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from U.C. Berkeley (1999), a Master in Architecture degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design (2004), and a Master of Advanced Studies from ETH Zurich (2010). Prior to teaching at Harvard, she has taught at the EPF Lausanne, MIT, and UC Berkeley.

chris van duijin

Partner, OMA

Chris van Duijn became partner in 2014 and is leading OMA’s work in Asia. Joining the practice in 1996, he has been involved in many of OMA’s most renowned projects including Universal Studios in Los Angeles, the Prada stores in New York and Los Angeles (2001), Casa da Musica in Porto (2005), and the CCTV Headquarters in Beijing (2012). In addition to large-scale and complex projects, he has worked on interiors and small-scale structures, including private houses, product design, and temporary structures such as the Prada Transformer in Seoul (2009). Recently completed projects include the Bibliothèque Alexis de Tocqueville in Caen, France (2017), Fondazione Prada in Milan (2015), and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow (2015). Current projects in Asia include the Hanwha Galleria Department Store in Seoul, a large-scale waterfront development in Nanjing, and two high-rise projects in Xiamen and Hangzhou. He is also leading the design of the Jean Jacques Bosc Bridge in Bordeaux; the construction of the Axel Springer Campus in Berlin and the Parc des Expositions in Toulouse. Chris holds a Master of Architecture from the Technical University of Delft.

Clifford Pearson

Editorial Director, KPF

Clifford Pearson is the editorial director of Kohn Pedersen Fox. From 2016 to 2018, he was the director of the University of Southern California’s American Academy in China and a lecturer at the USC School of Architecture. From 1989 through 2015, he was an editor at Architectural Record, serving as deputy editor-in-chief for the last 10 years. He oversaw the magazine’s coverage of Asia, acting as editor-in-charge of its China edition, 2008-2013. He is the co-author, with A. Eugene Kohn, of The World By Design, the author of Indonesia: Design and Culture, and the editor of Modern American Houses. In 2004 and 2006, he was the co-curator of the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Mr. Pearson holds a master's degree in architectural history from Columbia University and a bachelor's degree in urban studies from Cornell University.
